St. Paul was the first to reject the position of the pope, and this is recorded in Scripture, and is infallible. St. Thomas Aquinas rejects the position of absolute obedience. To be clear, in the case of heresy it is God who judges it because the Catholic Faith is revealed by God. The Pope is in effect judged by God as a heretic when he rejects the faith. Any man can identify the Pope as a heretic freely without any problem in that case. The man is not judging the Pope, the Pope has already been judged by God. The man is simply expressing an existing judgement.
